Art Deco Festival 2015

OCEAN DRIVE, MIAMI BEACH FLORIDA

The Miami Design Preservation League is excited to announce the 38th year of the Art Deco Festival! This year's 2015 festival will be looking back at the 100th year of Miami Beach's history, architecture and people.

This year's festival dates are:  Friday, January 16th 2015 to  Sunday, January 18th 2015.

It's incredible that Miami Beach became a city in 1915. For many years the plans were to make it a resort. If you have visited this city you may have noticed that Miami Beach are a series of Island. So years ago before bridges were made visitors took day-trips by ferry from Miami, across the bay.

This Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world! And it comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943.

However in the late 60's this once booming city became sadly tattered and abandon. Furthermore starting in the 70's and into the 80's some owners had purposefully neglected some of these buildings so that they could erect more modern high rise buildings.

Though thanks to the perseverance and feistiness of Barbara Baer Capitman Miami Beach would have not have had the rich history and charm that it has today. She along with industrial designer Leonard Horowitz founded The Miami Design Preservation League.

Although Barbara may have successfully won several wars. She knew well that the battle was not yet over. Throughout the years the city witness the demolition of many, many Art Deco hotels and buildings. Nowadays local preservationists are now facing a similar fight over notable single-family homes.
